As of April 4, 2013, amidst the celebrations of 11th anniversary of the Peace and National Reconciliation Day in Angola, the Angolan Museum of Armed Forces, is now referred to as National Museum of Military History.

The museum, located in Luanda, is now enriched with new exhibits comprised of military equipment and guns used by Angolan freedom fighters against the Portuguese occupation (1575-1700), during the struggle for independence (1961-1975) and against the apartheid aggression (1975-1988).

The whole infrastructure, built in 1576, was completely remodeled and a new look was given to its external side with placement of a statue of the Queen Nzinga Mbandi at the entrance and a 75m-tall flag-monument on the top of the building.

On the front left side of the museum you will find several weapons captured from the apartheid regime invading army and the military equipment used by the former People's Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA) at decisive battles of Kifangondo (1975) and Cuito Cuanavale (1988).

You will find also some deactivated bombs and pieces of South African military airplanes wiped out by FAPLA during the aggression of Angola by the troops of the apartheid regime. From 1975 to 1978, Sao Miguel Fort was the Headquarter of the People's Armed Forces.

The restoration of the military history museum meant to preserve the country’s past and recent history and to honor the bravery and heroism of the Angolan people, before the Portuguese occupation, during the struggle for independence, to maintain sovereignty, and for the liberation of Namibia and the end of the apartheid regime in South Africa.

The access to the military history museum is free and it is open to the public every day.
