The 104 meter (344 feet) tall waterfalls, locally known as “Quedas de Calandula”, are rated the 2nd largest waterfalls in Africa. Other enormous waterfalls are found in Angola, but the Kalandula Waterfalls on the Lucala River, north-west of the Malanje city, are the most impressive. |
Formerly known as “Duque de Bragança Falls”, and sometimes spelled as “Calandula Falls”, the Kalandula Waterfalls, second only to Victoria Falls in Africa, are a remarkable highlight amongst some of the most scenic landscapes available in Angola.
The wonderful Kalandula Waterfalls lies on the Lucala River in a semi-arid region where the vegetation is diverse, with gallery forests along the river, tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas in the surrounding area.
With about 400 meters (1,312 feet) wide the Kalandula Falls are a true wonder of the world, a nature’s hidden treasure and an important tourist attraction in Angola still to be discovered by worldwide travelers. Most of the explorers who visited the Kalandula Falls in recent years rated them as the 4th biggest and the most beautiful natural waterfalls in the world.
