António Agostinho Neto, a physician, poet and nationalist leader, was the first President of Angola, from November, 1975 to September, 1979.
President Neto, as commonly known in Angola, was born on September 17, 1922 in the village of Caxicane, Icolo e Bengo county, near the town of Catete, in northern Bengo province and died on September 10, 1979 in Moscow, Russia.
Agostinho Neto became a prominent figure in the 1940s when he became an important member of the movement that sought to rediscover traditional Angolan culture. In honor of the first President, a bronze statue was built at Independence Square, in the Angolan capital.

The largest and oldest institution of higher education in Angola, “Agostinho Neto University” is named after him as well as the tallest monument in Luanda, the “Agostinho Neto Mausoleum.”

Internationally, Agostinho Neto attained his principles of non-alliance and national independence, as he considered them  "essential stones in the politics of the People's Republic of Angola and necessary factors for the political, economic and social development of the country."

The international recognition of Agostinho Neto as an outstanding African leader was expressed by a number of awards, such as the Gold Medal of the World's Peace Council, Julie Curie in 1976, Honoris Cause of Lagos University (Nigeria), and Honorary Citizen of Mozambique, among others.

So, Agostinho Neto belongs to the gallery of  the best known African heroes, such as Kwame N`kruma, Leopoldo Sengor, Gamal Abdel Nasser and others, who dedicated their lives to the self-determination of people from the African continent.
